Focusing Construction and Selection of Abductive Hypotheses

چکیده

Many abductive understanding systems explain novel situations by a chaining process that is neutral to explainer needs beyond generating some plausible explanation for the event being explained. This paper examines the relationship of standard models of abductive understanding to the case-based explanation model. In case-based explanation, construction and selection of abductive hypotheses are focused by speci c explanations of prior episodes and by goal-based criteria re ecting current information needs. The case-based method is inspired by observations of human explanation of anomalous events during everyday understanding, and this paper focuses on the method's contributions to the problems of building good explanations in everyday domains. We identify ve central issues, compare how those issues are addressed in traditional and case-based explanation models, and discuss motivations for using the case-based approach to facilitate generation of plausible and useful explanations in domains that are complex and imperfectly understood.

Towards a generalized model of diagnostic behaviour

ARCHITECTURE The relationships within the domain of findings and the relationships within the domain of hypotheses are far more numerous and complex than their interrelationships. However, during the initial stages of diagnostic activity, the shifts of reasoning from the findings base to the diagnostic (hypotheses) base are crucial, as they establish the initial context for the problemsolving a...

The Activation of Hypotheses during Abductive Reasoning

Abductive reasoning, that is, finding an explanation for a set of observations, can be understood as a process of sequentially understanding and integrating new observations into a mental model about the current situation (Johnson & Krems, 2001; Josephson & Josephson, 1994). Whereas Johnson and Krems’ model focuses on conscious deliberate processes, it has been argued that automatic implicit pr...

Use of Current Explanations in Multicausal Abductive Reasoning Use of Current Explanations in Multicausal Abductive Reasoning

In multicausal abductive tasks a person must explain some findings by assembling a composite hypothesis that consists of one or more elementary hypotheses. If there are n elementary hypotheses, there can be up to 2 composite hypotheses. To constrain the search for hypotheses to explain a new observation, people sometimes use their current explanation—the previous evidence and their present comp...

A Identifying efficient abductive hypotheses using multi-criteria dominance relation

In this article, results of the automation of an abductive procedure are reported. This work is a continuation of our earlier research [Komosinski et al. 2012], where a general scheme of the procedure has been proposed. Here, a more advanced system developed to generate and evaluate abductive hypotheses is introduced. Abductive hypotheses have been generated by the implementation of the Synthet...

Gestalt Effects in Counterfactual and Abductive Inference

The paper begins by focusing the basic idea that Gestalt phenomena belong not only to the realm of perception but to the realm of inference. It is shown that Gestalt effects (i.e. the derivability of incompatible indifferent conclusions on the basis of the same background information) often occur both in counterfactual and in ampliative – i.e. inductive and abductive – reasoning. The main thesi...
